The Human Rights Foundation Offers Bitcoin Bug Bounties to Improve Bitcoin and the Lightning Network

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF), known for its efforts to promote freedom and human rights, has recently taken an interest in the blockchain industry. In a bid to improve Bitcoin and the Lightning Network, the organization is offering Bitcoin bug bounties. These bounties, worth 2 BTC each (equivalent to approximately $58,500 at current rates), aim to support the development of these technologies.

The HRF has issued ten bug bounties, encouraging individuals or teams to solve specific challenges related to Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. Any individual or team that successfully solves any of the challenges will be eligible to receive the bounty. The organization has allocated 20 BTC from its Bitcoin Development Fund for these bounties, indicating its dedication to expanding financial freedom.

Improving User Interface for Bitcoin Projects

One of the bug bounty challenges focuses on improving the user interface (UI) for Bitcoin projects. Currently, these projects heavily rely on proprietary design software called Figma. To streamline and enhance the user experience, the HRF aims to provide developers with free access to a Bitcoin UI guide. This guide will serve as a valuable resource in designing more user-friendly interfaces.

Another challenge aims to expand and strengthen Nostr, an open-source and censorship-resistant social network. Nostr, backed by Jack Dorsey, has gained significant attention in recent months, particularly among the more technically inclined crypto community. By offering a bug bounty for Nostr’s development, the HRF recognizes the potential of this decentralized social network in promoting freedom of expression.

Enhancing Bitcoin Wallets

The HRF is also offering bounties to enhance Bitcoin wallets. The objective here is to develop the ability to generate and memorize seed phrases when crossing borders, as this practice supports users seeking to maintain privacy and security. By allowing the seamless movement of seed phrases across borders, the HRF aims to promote financial freedom for dissidents and human rights activists worldwide.

Bitcoin Activists Can Make Submissions Until December 2024

The HRF team has set a deadline of December 31, 2024, for submissions to these bug bounties. All submissions will be reviewed and verified by external industry experts. Furthermore, any unclaimed bounties will be allocated back to the HRF’s Bitcoin Development Fund, ensuring that the fund continues to support future initiatives.

This is not the first time the HRF has launched a Bitcoin bounty program. Previously, in December 2021, the organization partnered with the Lightning Network payments platform, Strike, for a similar initiative. The contest consisted of three challenges, each worth 3 BTC, and ran until December 31, 2022.

By offering bug bounties, the HRF aims to encourage developers to contribute to the improvement of Bitcoin’s usability, privacy, and security. This initiative aligns with the organization’s mission to support open-source developers working to enhance the functionality of digital tools used by activists around the world. The HRF recognizes the potential of blockchain technology to promote financial freedom and ensure the protection of human rights in the digital realm.
