About Beyond Question

The remotes have buttons that correspond to potential student answers.

Beyond Question works by allowing every student to answer every question the instructor presents. Each student has a remote control with buttons that correspond to multiple choice or true / false answers. As the instructor presents a question, each student presses the remote button that corresponds to his or her answer. All of these answers are gathered by a computer and organized to give the instructor immediate feedback. This approach enhances the learning environment in several ways.

  Facilitating Student Learning

Because Beyond Question comes with a variety of tools designed to simplify life for the instructor, it is sometimes easy to forget that its primary purpose is to enhance the learning process. This enhancement is accomplished in two primary ways.

Student Participation

Graphs give students feedback.

First, Beyond Question dramatically increases the amount of student participation in the learning process. In a traditional environment, students must either wait until they are called on to answer a question or must wait until the instructor grades a set of quizzes or tests. In the first case, only one student gets to participate at a time; in the second, students must wait hours or even days to get feedback about their performance. With Beyond Question, each student receives an opportunity to answer every question, followed by immediate feedback indicating whether or not that student is on the right track.

Not only does Beyond Question allow every student to answer, it encourages them to do so by ensuring that only the teacher knows which student gave which answer. This anonymity helps relieve the peer pressure that can interfere with a student's ability to reason out an answer and that so often causes shy students to remain uninvolved.

Adaptive Teaching

Beyond Question's second major contribution to the learning process comes from the way in which it allows instructors to adapt quickly to the exact needs of the students. Some classes pick up certain ideas faster than others, and not all students begin at the same level of proficiency.
Instructors can see how individual students are responding.     Beyond Question allows the instructor to see how individual students respond to a question as those students answer. By having this information immediately available, the instructor can quickly determine when the class as a whole is ready to move on and when more time needs to be devoted to the current topic. Just as importantly, the instructor can rapidly identify students that are struggling and that may require additional help. This results in a more efficient use of time with fewer unpleasant surprises when students are tested.

  Grading, Attendance, and Reporting Tools

It's important for an instructor to not only make productive use of time spent with the students, but also to have sufficient time in the first place. Precious minutes spent handling the administrative chores so often associated with teaching represent a missed opportunity.

Administrative tools save instructors time and effort.

Beyond Question addresses this issue by providing the instructor with an array of powerful tools that facilitate common tasks such as taking attendance, grading quizzes and tests, and gathering information about student performace. Instructors can assign points to individual questions or allow the software to simply calculate the percentage of questions answered correctly by each student. The instructor's remote frees the instructor from having to be near the computer, and once all of the results are in, the instructor can quickly and effortlessly print them or export them to a favorite spreadsheet program. There's even a separate helper application designed specifically to coordinate the results of student surveys.
